Join the Movement: The Ubuntu Proteomics Summer School 2026 Empowers Africa’s Future in Proteomics

A week away from the lab, a week for proteomics. This is the essence of the Ubuntu Proteomics Summer School (UPSS). Since its beginning, UPSS has become one of Africa’s most highly anticipated scientific training events. This week-long residential program brings together leading international experts, postgraduate students, and early-career researchers for an immersive experience dedicated to advancing skills in proteomics, all while having some much-needed fun. If you do not believe us, here are some testimonials:

“Surpassed my expectations!”

“My favourite part is how the summer school creates an environment where high-level academics (e.g., professors) are highly accessible. There’s very little emphasis on titles, making interactions feel more natural and approachable rather than intimidating.”

What truly sets UPSS apart is its unique blend of intensive learning, global collaboration, and genuine team building through fun activities. Participants dive deep into the world of proteomics through two distinct tracks designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience.

  • The Concept Track lays the foundation by exploring the fundamentals of proteomics ensuring every participant has a strong theoretical grasp.
  • The Applications Track moves from theory to practice, offering applications and research training with real datasets and cutting-edge workflows.

“The summer school was structured in a way that progressively clarified all the uncertainties I had in proteomics. With each session, my understanding deepened, leading to several ‘aha’ moments that made complex concepts finally click.”

“I found the course very informative, interesting, and relaxing in its lecture session, round table discussion, networking, poster presentation and team building activities.”

UPSS is a truly global event with a local impact. It brings together a diverse and distinguished group of international facilitators and trainers from Europe, the Americas, and Africa. These experts share best practices and foster a spirit of cross-border collaboration that extends far beyond the program itself. Beyond the formal sessions, UPSS is an exceptional opportunity for networking and collaboration. Participants forge lasting connections through informal “meet-the-experts” sessions, engaging roundtables, and a variety of fun activities, ensuring that the learning and collaboration continue well outside the classroom.

“The lectures and an easy interaction with the facilitators made it easy for us to learn as much as we could. Poster sessions allowed us to connect with everyone including students and facilitators too. It was easy for them to have input on our research as they could see the outline and the progress.”

“I’m glad to have had the chance to share ideas and learn from people with such diverse backgrounds, guided by incredibly experienced facilitators; it was truly enriching for me. It gave me a unique opportunity to expand my own understanding, while also broadening my perspective through the exchange of different viewp ints. The experience felt personal and rewarding, laying the groundwork for future collaboration.”

Each year, UPSS showcases a different region of South Africa; Stellenbosch (2023), Cradle of Humankind (2024), and KwaZulu-Natal (2025). In 2026, the school travels to George, Western Cape, with the 2027 edition already planned for the Drakensberg. This rotating model highlights South Africa’s rich diversity. But the story of the UPSS isn’t just about location; it’s about connection. It’s about the 60 participants who learn from and network with 16 world-renowned facilitators. It’s about those spontaneous conversations over coffee that lead to lifelong collaborations. It’s where you’ll find the mentors and peers who will shape your career.

Joining the 2026 UPSS is an opportunity to gain advanced skills in proteomics, a field that is shaping the future of healthcare, agriculture, and biotechnology. More than just a training program, UPSS is a unique platform that builds critical scientific capacity, connecting you with peers and leaders who are pushing the frontiers of “omics” technologies.

Registrations are now open and spaces are limited to ensure a high-quality learning experience. Don’t miss your chance to be part of the next chapter of this impactful initiative and part of a movement that is building a vibrant, interconnected scientific community across the continent. The knowledge you gain and the networks you build there will empower you to make a global impact.
