Oxford Nanopore Techologies laboratory workshop

Event Date

18 - 21 November 2025

Hosted by the University of Pretoria Genomics Laboratory (UPGL) | Supported by the ACGT

Overview

The ACGT is supporting UPGL in hosting a hands-on Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) Laboratory Workshop. This workshop is designed to introduce participants to ONT platforms, workflows, and essential techniques used in nano-pore-based sequencing.

Workshop Scope

Participants will gain practical skills and insights in the following areas:

  • Fundamentals of Oxford Nanopore Technologies, including workflow design and troubleshooting,
  • DNA quality control requirements and recommendations for DNA isolation,
  • Library preparation and sequencing using PromethION flow cells.
  • Hands-on sessions:
    • Loading Flongle, MinION, and PromethION flow cells

    • Flow cell washing procedures

  • Introduction to ONT community resources and bioinformatics workflows,
  • Opportunity to nominate a South African biodiversity species for the 1KSA initiative

-Supported nominations may have the chance to prepare DNA libraries for their species during the workshop.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is aimed at researchers, postgraduate students, and laboratory personnel working in genomics or related fields who are interested in implementing or learning about nano-pore sequencing technologies.

Time: Attendance required from 8h00 to 17h00
Location: Plant Sciences Complex, Hatfield Campus, University of Pretoria
